Love and Lofoten

Lofoten, Norway

If you are looking for a romantic getaway to make that special proposal, Lofoten in Norway may be just perfect.

As the Winter in the Arctic Circle draws to a close this serene Norwegian archipelago, with its characteristic waterside confetti of red houses, or hyttes, is the perfect romantic getaway. Visiting in February and March, when the Sun is visible for about six hours a day, yet still before the tourist maelstrom of Spring and Summer, can be immensely rewarding. There are of course challenges travelling to the far north of the planet at this time of year, but for the intrepid visitor the lure of dramatic vistas, the Aurora Borealis (try and choose accommodation that faces North), and deep powdery snow can be irresistible. Top it off with white-washed interiors of cosy wooden cabins warmed with wood-burning stoves, and hot tubs and saunas overlooking fjords, and you may never want to leave. With the shorter colder days, you may prefer to leave hiking and sailing until the Summer, but for photography, perhaps a little fishing, and snowshoeing, and lying in the snow looking at the type of cerulean blue skies you only find in pristine atmospheres there are few Winter getaways that can match northern Norway.

While nightlife may not be at its full ebb in Winter, the islands of Lofoten are said to filled with youthful energy even during the quieter seasons, when you can spot surfers aplenty, or even join in yourself. And keep a look out for sea eagles, orcas, and Arctic foxes. Finally, walking on a beautiful sandy beach while it is snowing is something to be experienced at least once in your life.

Visiting Lofoten will take a little planning, but accommodation is comparatively easy to find in the Winter. There are several methods of getting to the islands, including flights from Gatwick to Bodo followed by a bus and ferry. But with the longer daylight hours in February and March, car hire offers the most freedom and best opportunity to enjoy the amazing landscapes. Definitely something to make you smile.
