Corrimony Autumn Storm Revisited

Corrimony lies in Glen Urquhart, west of Loch Ness, amid wooded hills, farmland, and scattered settlements. It is perhaps best known for its Neolithic chambered cairn, although the surrounding landscape has a much longer history of settlement and rural life.

I have a longstanding connection with Corrimony, and it remains a recurring subject in my paintings. I have also dreamt about the place almost every night for more than twenty-five years. I have never been able to explain why it has such a persistent presence.

The small white building in this painting is Corrimony Mission Church, a modest rural church that has been part of the local landscape for well over a century. When I lived in the area, we knew it as the Mission House.

I was particularly interested in the enormous tree, its structure and the movement of its branches against the stormy sky. The autumn foliage contrasts with the cooler colours of the approaching weather, while the church gives a sense of scale beneath the spreading canopy.

I painted this work in acrylic on canvas, using expressive brushwork and layers of colour rather than attempting a detailed representation. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of an autumn storm and the changing light across a landscape I know so well.

Corrimony is somewhere I keep returning, both in my paintings, as well as in my dreams.
