Walking Home
Watercolour on 100% cotton paper, 200 × 200 mm
This little painting shows my husband, Neil, walking home with Mish and Storm, our two black Labradors, across the wheat field in front of our house in Easter Ross. The field rolled down towards the Cromarty Firth and was part of the landscape we saw every day.
It had been raining, and the route through the field was wet. Water had run down the track, creating the dark green strip through the yellow wheat. I liked the way it led the eye through the field towards Neil and the dogs.
I painted it in watercolour on Arches paper, keeping the washes loose and allowing the colours to move into one another. I was more interested in the colour and feel of the landscape than in describing every detail.
What I like most about the painting now is that it records a completely ordinary moment on an early evening in autumn: Neil taking the dogs out and walking home across a field we knew so well.
